Basement Windows @ The New Shop

Although I was concerned about getting the inside of my new workshop figured out, Eric was intent on working on much more important things.

This is one of our side basement windows:


You can see the window is broken and old and pretty much in poor shape.  Eric took it out, digging around the foundation, where he will put a window well to stop water from getting in.


Here is the new window installed:

Obviously, the trim around it and the whole house needs painting, but this alone is a big improvement.

Of course that is not the only basement window needing to be replaced.



Today it poured rain.  And we found a major problem.  The house is leaking through the bottom of the foundation, and halfway down the foundation.  Our basement had a LOT of water in it.  Thankfully the sump pump is working to remove the water, but we will need to do some major digging and repair the foundation.  Husband is not happy!

    Oh no!! Hope it isn't too costly to fix. What a pain!

    That's too bad about the leaking. I hate leaks. It is a cute looking place otherwise. Hope it can be done right and cost effectively too.

    Sadly, the real fix will be to trench inside the walls of the basement. The biggest outside improvement will be grading, but it looks like this might be a problem for you. Also gutters..

    I have been thru all of this for years in my basement shop. Inside drainage is the only thing that helpled.

    Enjoy following along. I think you are going to have a GREAT place for work and to display your work. Also making the old house a part of the community. I am sure you will make some new friends along the way...

    Thanks all for your concern! The plan is to dig out around the foundation on two sides where the water seems to be coming in. Then we (he) will coat the foundation and fill back in. We need to do the driveways, there are two, one comes in on each side of the house and around the back. Those will be sloped away from the house and towards the street.

    Oh man! Sorry to hear about the water leaks, but sounds like you have a plan to fix it. I'm still in awe that you have such a terrific space for a shop. Looks like you will even have space for a permanent spray booth/room. I can't wait to see it set up.

    I'm so behind on my reading but I've caught up now! Congrats on the new space - it's going to be amazing (and I'm going to be amazingly jealous). So sorry to hear about the water troubles though. I'm sure you'll get it all taken care of but wouldn't it be nice if stuff like that would just magically solve itself....or just never exist in the first place.

    I'm so sorry about the water leaks! We never want that kind of stuff popping up in our homes. As Gail said, it's so good that you two are so handy!
